Suicide Facts and Figures​

This summary of facts is taken from England, Wales and the Republic of Ireland only because of delays of data for Scotland and Northern Ireland due to COVID-19. Complete figures for the UK for 2019 will be released at a later date by the Office for National Statistics and the changes will be reflected below.

Suicide rates in England and Wales
In England and Wales, there were 5,691 suicides in 2019 - that is 321 more than the previous year. Suicide rates are 11 deaths per 100,000 people, higher than in recent years.

The suicide rate in Women under 25 has increased by a massive 93.8% since 2012 - the highest level on record.

Suicide rates in Republic of Ireland
In the Republic of Ireland there were 421 suicides in 2019, an increase of 69 on the previous hear. This is an increase of 19% on the suicide rate.

Suicide rates in both men and women have increased in the Republic of ireland, following a downward trend since 2011 - the rate is 3 times higher amongst men than women.
