Question?

Yeah I was just wondering and I know I should've asked the doctor that did my physical at the hospital yesterday if it was related or not to my depression/bipolar.

But here's the question: Is hypothyroid part of what I need to deal with, due to depression or Bipolar? And also is sleep apnea also something that worsens in patients(like me) with Bipolar or depression?

Just curious, cuz the doc at the hospital yesterday said that my thyroid levels were out of whack, and one of my former roommates had complained about my sleep(she had said that I stopped breathing during sleep). She had told the nurses that were on the nightly shift to keep monitoring both my breathing and my heart rate whilst I was sleeping. So they did. The results were that my heart beat faster when I stopped breathing. I didn't know I wasn't breathing, so they figured that it was sleep-related stuff.

Anywho. My roommate had also voiced her concern for me, because she was afraid that I was going to die if my breathing during sleep kept up the way it was. The nurses and staff at the hospital told her(which I agree with them with what they said), that she should focus on her own recovery instead of mine. But I not only agreed with the staff, but of course, I agreed with her. I voiced my concerns, and they said I might have sleep apnea. <_<

Another concern is Diabetes. They only tested me almost half in the hospital on Wednesday, whilst waiting for my admittance into the psych ward. So now on the 28th this month when I go to a regular doctor and tell about my sleep stuff, and my thyroid problems, I'll have to mention a full test for Diabetes as well.

Today I got extremely shakey during lunch(whilst eating). I'm so worried that my chances of having Diabetes whilest having mental illness(Bipolar) will eventually make everything worse.

my mum has an underactive thyroid and when her hormones started going out of sync it caused a major breakdown were she couldnt leave the house, severe anxiety, depression.....
it was misdiagnosed as being depression related for along time until the clever doctor realised that it was more of a medical thing rather than depression in its true form.

hyperthroidism wouldnt be the cause of your bipolar, NO..... but your thyroid levels could affect your mood if that makes sense. :bigarmhug:

^Okay. I understand. Now. But then again what about Diabetes? Would possibly having it meann that my Bipolar disorder would get worse?

not too sure of diabetes tbh......
i know if glucose levels are out of sync it can make you groggy and stuff but thats as far as my knowledge goesI have something called hyperglycemia or something which is borderlineing onto diabetes but not that serious yet. means my sugar levels dip in and out sometimes. I think its more being a chocoholic that causes that.

with the sleep apnea it depends what type you got.
Things like being overweight can cause sleep apnea which is not too good where meds have side effects that make you put on weight.

If its the kind that wakes you up when you stop breathing it can cause you to feel overly tired of a day due to disturbed sleep which will affect anyone in any form of mental distress as rest is paramount to care.

I'd speek to you g,p though. he;ll be able to tell you much more than i can.

I dont think either would cause your bipolar to be worse if well managed like any health condition. Just bout getting the balance right. at the end of the day if we are physicly healthy, we are more likely to experience a sounder frame of mind.

Hi Vickie how r u? ,
Hypothyroidism may be a result of ur medicine like lithium especially in females , in such a case ur mood disorder may become rapid cycling , or u r condition resists Tx until hormonal supply s given.
As regards DM , most antipsychotics elevates blood sugar u may need to shift to the one least diabetogenic
Also there interactions among antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, lithium , ssri's , oral hypoglycemics and insulin , monitoring s advisable

Well. I never did ask him about it, and now I'm still stuck with the question. Darn. I dunno when my next doctor's appointment is. I have been scheduled to go to an endocrinologist and also been ordered to do a sleep study. The endocrinologist isn't until the 4th of next month. But still haven't had my sleep study yet. Hmmm...
